Emotiv Systems, based in San Francisco, has secured over $6 million in venture funding to develop technology that allows humans to interact with computer applications via thoughts. Based on the latest developments in neuro-technology, the Company claims to have developed a helmet device that can detect thoughts, feeling and expression. SoftKinetic is commercializing technology that recognizes gestures and body movements for 3D gaming - very cool. The technology uses an off the shelf infrared camera for depth perception and a proprietary algorithmic software program, which can accurately interpret what the body is doing.

Other related technology in development are eye-controlled interactive systems, so you can potentially control a computer GUI with your eyes.

I met Peter Roizen, the intriguing inventor of WildWords, at Kepler’s Bookstore in Menlo Park. WildWords is a great example of adding an innovative twist to a classic product. It’s incredibly more fun than Scrabble, because a dozen wild asterisk tiles and any tile played on one of 20 Turn-To-Wild squares can be used to represent any series of one or more letters, so you can completely bluff. Dramatic comebacks are possible, and your ability to bluff, or to call a bluff, add a compelling element of gamesmanship.

WildWords is available at select independent stores, or online for $29.95 plus $7 for shipping.
