The CrunchPad, a simple touchscreen tablet designed for surfing the web.

Michael Arrington has announced the specs of the second prototype of the CrunchPad.

I wonder if the real innovation here is the process by which the product is being developed.

To use Sam Savage’s analogy (doesn’t quite work perfectly in this case but close enough): The CrunchPad is a lightbulb, but the process by which it was created is like electricity that can potentially power many light bulbs.

Basically, Michael is using the reach and power of the TechCrunch platform, to inexpensively crowd source the development of the product (like Cambrian House, but more effectively?)

3d skin for the Iphone
Thursday January 08th 2009, 4:50 am

3d-shellThe Wazabee 3DeeShell (link here) uniquely depicts 3D content such as games, pictures and videos on the Apple iPhone in an (allegedly) extraordinarily realistic way.

The housing contains a lens that eliminates the need for special 3D glasses. The lens can easily be removed at any time in order to switch back and forth between normal 2D and “spellbinding” 3D graphics.

Scheduled to ship in a few weeks.

Tom Peters: “This is not a recession, but a recalibration.”
Wednesday January 07th 2009, 10:12 pm

Don’t think of our current economic crisis as a recession. Instead, think of it as a recalibration.

Everything is different now.

If you think of it as a recession, you may be tempted to “hunker down” and wait for the economy to cycle back.

If you think of it as a recalibration, you will be motivated to focus on what you have to do differently, since everything is different now.

The way your business generates results is different, now.

Your customers think differently, now.

Your customers care about different things, now.

Your customers act differently, now.

Your customers may actually be different people, now.

Customers aren’t disposable anymore; more than ever, you have to create sustainable customer relationships.

Everything is different now.

WHAT IS A ROBOT AND WHAT IS A HUMAN? A theoretical future question.
Wednesday January 07th 2009, 9:43 pm

In an interview with Computerworld, Intel CTO Justin Rattner said that as early as 2012, we will see the lines between human and machine intelligence begin to blur. Nanoscale chips or machines will move through our bodies, fixing deteriorating organs or unclogging arteries, he predicted. Virtual worlds will become increasingly realistic, while robots will develop enough intelligence and humanlike characteristics that they will become companions, not merely vacuum cleaners and toys, he said.

And one artificial intelligence researcher said in an interview that robotics will make such dramatic advances in the coming years that humans will be marrying robots by the year 2050. Robots will become so humanlike — having intelligent conversations, displaying emotions and responding to human emotions — that they will be very much like a new race of people, said David Levy, a British artificial intelligence researcher who wrote the book Love and Sex With Robots.

Employing Madison Avenue to promote peace and democracy

“Over the long term, the United States cannot kill or capture its way to victory.”

– Robert Gates

Why can’t we deploy the collective genius of Mad Avenue, to help win over the hearts and minds of those who hate us?

It seems to me that the ideals of peace, freedom, prosperity and democracy, as well as the substance of our foreign aid, non-governmental and academic assistance to those in need can easily win over the doctrine of terrorism, hate, and  tyranny.
